Hanging indentation is indicated for reference lists and bibliographies in several citations styles, including APA, MLA and Chicago Style

to format hanging indents: 

Microsoft Word

  1. Highlight the section of text you would like to indent.
  2. Go to Format > Paragraph in the top bar menu
  3. Select Indentation in the Indents and Spacing tab
  4. Under "Special" select "Hanging"
  5. Click OK. 

Google Docs

  1. Highlight the section of text you would like to indent
  2. Go to Format > Align & Indent > Indentation options in the top menu 
  3. under Special intent select "Hanging" 
  4. Click "Apply"
