What is a DOI and how do I find it?

Answer

DOI stands for Digital Object Identifier. The DOI system is an international standard which assigns permanent links to published works such as journal articles. Older articles published before 2000 are unlikely to have DOIs, though some have been assigned retrospectively.   If an article has a DOI, there are a few ways to find it:

  • from an article’s record in a database
  • from the article page
  • in CrossRef - go to "search metadata" and enter the article title and author
Some citation styles prefer a DOI over a URL, as they will not change over time. See your citation style guide for details.
